I pulled a body armor vest out of my closet that I wore as an undercover narcotics officer starting in 1988. The date stamp on it reads 1995. The elastic straps are shot, the velcro is worn through, and it still has the old trauma plate I was eventually told to stop using. By manufacturer guidelines, this vest should have been replaced six times over. So I did what any retired SWAT cop with a Smith and Wesson Model 29 would do. I shot it.

What I found out matters for every prepper and church security volunteer who has an old vest sitting in a closet and isn’t sure whether to trust it.

The Vest, the Guns, and the Setup

This was a Level IIIA vest from Safariland, manufactured in 1995. I wore it for roughly five years in narcotics, then used it off and on for another decade as a backup during SWAT training. That means heat, sweat, compression, and storage abuse over the better part of thirty years.

I ran it against the following:

A .38 Special, shot from a Smith and Wesson Chief’s Special. When I started in 1988, some detectives were still carrying this as their primary weapon. It was a bad idea even then, but it represents the lower end of the threat spectrum.

A 9mm, fired from my dad’s Smith and Wesson Model 39. He carried it as a narcotics detective through the 70s and 80s. Sentimental? Absolutely. Still a relevant caliber? More than ever.

A .44 Magnum, fired from a Smith and Wesson Model 29. The same revolver Dirty Harry pointed at every bad guy he ever encountered. The vest is rated for .44 Magnum at a 240-grain load.

Double-ought buckshot from a Remington 870 with the old folding stock. Because if you’re going to stress-test something, you might as well do it right.

And finally, five rounds of Speer Gold Dot G2 9mm self-defense ammunition from a modern carry pistol. This is the ammo that bad guys are increasingly likely to have access to, and it’s what the vest would face on the street today.

What the Old Vest Actually Did

The .38 Special didn’t make it through the first layer of Kevlar. It stopped cold and fell inside the panel. No penetration.

The 9mm was stopped before it reached the halfway point through the vest. It penetrated one layer of Kevlar and stopped.

The .44 Magnum pushed through approximately three layers before stopping. The bullet was recovered inside the panel. The back face deformation was noticeable, meaning the person wearing it would have had serious blunt force trauma to deal with, but the round did not exit.

The shotgun load collapsed the panel significantly. You could feel the clump of buckshot compressed inside. Nothing came through the back. A person wearing it would likely be dealing with a broken sternum and organ damage from the impact, but they would be alive.

The Speer Gold Dot G2, fired five times with modern self-defense rounds from a modern pistol, was stopped by the 31-year-old vest. Every round was recovered inside the panel, none reaching even halfway through the Kevlar layers.

By every standard that matters in a gunfight, the old vest performed. It stopped what it was rated to stop.

Why You Should Still Upgrade

Stopping bullets is not the only measure of a vest’s performance.

The back face deformation on my 31-year-old vest was significantly worse than what I measured on the new Premier Body Armor vest I tested alongside it. That matters because back face deformation is blunt force trauma transferred to your body. A vest that stops a round but collapses three inches into your chest is still going to put you on the ground. Modern manufacturing has reduced that deformation substantially.

Beyond performance under impact, the physical degradation of an old vest is a real concern. The elastic carriers are worn out. The velcro doesn’t seat properly. A vest that moves around on your body because the retention system has failed is not a vest doing its job. The fit problems alone are a reason to replace it, even if the Kevlar panels are still functional.

And there is the practical reality of modern threats. The ammunition available on the street today is more capable than what was common in 1995. Self-defense and hollow point rounds have advanced considerably. While my old vest handled the Gold Dot G2 in the test, continued wear degrades the panel’s integrity over time in ways that are not always visible from the outside.

Technology has also simply gotten better. The new vest I tested was thinner, lighter, and showed less back face deformation than my 31-year-old vest under the same loads. Ounces equal pounds, and pounds equal pain. A lighter vest is one you will actually wear consistently, which is the only vest that helps you.

What This Means for the Prepared Christian

If you have old body armor in your closet and no budget for a replacement right now, this test should give you some confidence that it may still offer meaningful protection. It is not worthless. But it is also not optimal, and the technology gap between 1995 and today is significant.

If you are part of a church security team, this is worth discussing with your team leader. Many church security volunteers are using personal gear that may be years past the manufacturer’s recommended service life. That does not mean it is useless, but it does mean an honest assessment is in order.

That matters for church security, where you are trying to blend into a Sunday morning service while still being protected. A Word on Stewardship

Scripture has something to say about the responsibility of those who are charged with protecting others. In Nehemiah 4, when the workers rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem faced the threat of attack, they did not ignore it or assume it would not come to them. Nehemiah put armed men behind the lower parts of the wall and positioned them by families with their swords, spears, and bows.

“And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, ‘Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.’” Nehemiah 4:14 (ESV)

Stewardship of your safety equipment is part of that same responsibility. You cannot protect anyone if you are down. Worn-out gear is not humility. It is a liability.

Bottom Line

Body armor does not expire the way a carton of milk expires. But that does not mean the five-year manufacturer recommendation is meaningless. The recommendation exists because performance degrades over time and modern materials outperform older ones in ways that matter when rounds are hitting you.

If you are still wearing a vest from the 1990s because you never got around to replacing it, this test suggests you are not necessarily unprotected. But you are wearing gear that is behind the technology curve, and at $300 for a quality modern vest, the upgrade cost is modest compared to what it is protecting.

Take care of your equipment. Take care of yourselves. You cannot take care of the people in that building if you are not still standing.

Most people imagine a terror attack as one attacker with one weapon in one location. That model is too simple.

Real attacks can involve several methods and several phases. A vehicle may be the first weapon. An explosion may drive people into the open. Gunfire may begin after the crowd starts running. In some cases attackers hit several locations at once, or one attack pushes people directly into another danger area.

When that happens the problem looks very different from the lone gunman scenario people usually picture. You may be dealing with confusion, injured people, blocked exits, and police moving rapidly toward the scene. The place that feels safe at first may not actually be safe.

Your goal is not to stop the attack. Your goal is to get yourself and the people with you out of the danger area alive.

Stop Thinking the Attack Ends With the First Event

In a layered attack the first event may only be the beginning. A vehicle attack may be followed by gunfire. An explosion may be followed by another device or another attacker.

Instead of focusing on what just happened, focus on what could happen next.

If a vehicle just drove into a crowd, do not assume the threat is over because the vehicle stopped. If there has been an explosion, do not assume the area nearby is safe. If everyone around you is running in one direction, do not assume the crowd knows where safety is.

Panic spreads faster than accurate information.

Think in layers. Look for cover. Look for exits. Look for the possibility of another attacker. Keep moving until you are clearly outside the hazard area.

Movement Is Life

In most cases your best option is movement. That movement must be deliberate.

If a vehicle is bearing down on you, move laterally. Do not try to outrun it straight ahead. Vehicles are faster than people. Get behind something that can stop a moving vehicle such as large concrete barriers, heavy planters, thick structural columns, or the corner of a solid building. A parked car will not reliably stop a speeding vehicle.

If you move inside a building, get well inside and away from entrances and glass. Vehicles can travel farther than people expect once they crash through doors or windows.

If you are caught in a crowd, work toward the edges instead of letting the crowd carry you. Face the direction you want to move and protect your balance. Move diagonally when possible and avoid pushing directly against the flow. Look for service exits, side corridors, or alternate routes rather than funneling into the same doorway everyone else is using.

Do not stop at the first place that feels quieter. Stop when you are confident you are outside the attack pattern.

Your Gun Is a Tool to Get to Safety

A firearm can be useful in a crisis, but it is not a counterterror strategy.

In a large chaotic attack you may be dealing with multiple attackers, different weapons, and a police response arriving quickly. Your firearm is primarily a tool to break contact if someone blocks your path to safety.

Trying to hunt attackers in a crowded environment is extremely dangerous. You could be killed by another attacker you did not see, or mistaken for the attacker by responding officers or another armed citizen.

Carry reliable equipment and train with it. If you carry a handgun you should be able to deploy it quickly and make accurate hits under stress. If you cannot do that, the gun will not solve the problem by itself.

Also remember that a handgun or rifle will not stop a moving vehicle.

Medical Gear Often Saves More Lives

Severe bleeding is one of the most common preventable causes of death in violent incidents.

A small trauma kit can make a significant difference. A tourniquet, compression bandage, gauze, and shears take very little space but can keep someone alive until professional help arrives.

If you are able to move after an explosion or attack, your first step is still to leave the immediate danger area. Once you are outside the kill zone you can address life threatening bleeding.

If a loved one is wounded but can be moved, getting them away from the scene may be the most important action you take.

Learn to Read Your Environment

Preparation starts before anything happens.

Pay attention to your surroundings. Notice exits. Notice barriers that could stop vehicles. Notice choke points where crowds might pile up.

Watch for things that are out of place. A vehicle where vehicles should not be. A bag left somewhere unusual. Someone placing an object and quickly leaving. Wires or containers that clearly do not belong where they are.

Situational awareness is a learned habit. The more you practice looking for exits, cover, and potential hazards, the more natural it becomes.

Communication During Chaos

During major emergencies cell networks often become overloaded. Everyone tries to call at once.

Families should have simple plans before entering crowded environments. Choose rally points. Decide where you will meet if separated. Know the name of the venue and nearby streets.

If you need to report information to police or emergency dispatchers, clear information helps. Describe what happened, where you are, what the suspect looked like, what direction they moved, and what weapons you saw.

If you are hiding from an active threat, avoid posting photos or videos that reveal your location. Public information can expose hiding places and responder movements.

Planning Ahead

The easiest attack to survive is the one you never walk into.

Large public gatherings such as festivals, concerts, parades, and crowded entertainment districts create attractive targets for attackers. That does not mean you stop living your life, but it does mean you should think ahead before going.

Look for vehicle barriers. Identify multiple exits. Decide where you would move if something happened. Think about how you would leave if the main route was blocked.

People who mentally rehearse possible emergencies often make better decisions when something actually happens.

Biblical Perspective

Christians are not called to live in fear, but we are expected to pay attention to the world around us.

Jesus addressed this directly in Luke 12:54–56:

“When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?” (ESV)

Christ was pointing out that people are capable of recognizing signs in the natural world, yet many fail to recognize the dangers or important events unfolding around them.

The same principle applies to personal safety and preparedness. Paying attention to warning signs, observing your surroundings, and preparing for danger is not paranoia. It is discernment.

Christians should not move through the world blindly. We are called to be observant and wise about the times we live in. When danger appears, wisdom means recognizing it early and taking action to protect the people God has entrusted to our care.

Preparation is not about fear. It is about seeing clearly and acting wisely.

Conclusion

A distributed terror attack is a survival problem built on awareness, movement, and preparation.

The first attack may not be the only attack. The nearest shelter may not be safe. The crowd may not know where safety is.

Your priorities are straightforward. Move away from danger. Use solid cover. Keep your family together if possible. Stop severe bleeding. Communicate clearly.

Preparation done before a crisis allows you to act decisively when seconds matter.

Iran holds approximately 404 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent, and analysts assess the regime could reach weapons-grade enrichment within days to weeks if it makes that decision. Having nuclear material is not the same as having a nuclear weapon, but the gap between those two points is narrower than most Americans understand. All four conditions analysts historically associate with Iranian nuclear use have now been met. Christian families who cannot sustain their households through a significant supply chain disruption need to close that gap now.

Situation Summary

Iran’s uranium stockpile is enriched to approximately 60 percent. Weapons-grade uranium requires 90 percent enrichment. That difference means the material Iran holds right now is not a weapon and is not yet fuel for one, but the enrichment step that once took years could now be accomplished in days to weeks under a crash program.

Some diplomatic assessments indicate that if Iran enriched its current stockpile and successfully weaponized the material, it could theoretically support 10 to 11 nuclear devices. That figure assumes technical execution Iran has not yet demonstrated, but the material question is no longer the uncertainty it was five years ago.

From Material to Weapon: What War Changes

The four conditions analysts traditionally identify as prerequisites for Iranian nuclear use have all been met. Regime survival is in question. Nuclear facilities are under active threat. The regime has signaled interest in negotiations, indicating it understands its leverage is shrinking. And it has demonstrated willingness to strike regional neighbors.

A regime that concludes survival is no longer possible does not behave like a rational deterrence actor. It behaves like a regime with nothing left to lose. That is not a deterrence problem. That is a collapse problem, and collapses do not follow predictable timelines or respond to the logic that kept things stable for the past 40 years.

There is active discussion about special operations raids on Iranian nuclear facilities to seize enriched uranium before it can be weaponized further. Delta Force and SEAL Team Six are the most likely units for that mission, with Air Force Special Operations support. That is an extraordinarily dangerous operation, and the fact that it is being discussed publicly is a concern. Strategic ambiguity exists for a reason.

Threat Vectors

The range of outcomes here is wide, and that width should drive preparation rather than paralysis. At the most severe end, an EMP detonated at altitude over the continental United States could disable most of the electrical grid and produce catastrophic mortality within the first year through cascading infrastructure failures. At the less severe end, a nuclear exchange between regional actors, even one not involving the United States directly, would produce immediate supply chain disruption, food system stress, energy price spikes, and a conflict expansion that pulls in additional parties.

The direct threat to most American households is not a nuclear strike on their city. Bulk dry goods stored in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, sealed into five-gallon buckets, store well for 20 years or more at minimal cost. That is not a bunker. That is a pantry with a longer runway. If you are just starting, buy a little extra every time you go to the store and rotate through it. The goal is a household that does not panic when the first shelves go empty.

Water storage, a communications plan, basic medical supplies, and 90-day prescription reserves belong on the same list. Keep your vehicle above half a tank as a standing discipline. Have cash on hand. Know how you will reach your family if cell infrastructure is degraded. Know your neighbors. Community cohesion is not a soft preparedness concept. In every documented case of civilian resilience under sudden disruption, it has been the factor that determined who came through and who did not.

Action Steps

Start this week with an honest audit of your pantry and water supply. Work toward 30 days of shelf-stable food as a near-term goal, with six months as the target. If you take prescription medications, pursue a 90-day supply now. Pharmacies are among the first businesses disrupted when civil order degrades and supply chains tighten.

Over the next 30 days, address fuel and cash. Keep your vehicle above half a tank as a standing discipline. Stage additional fuel if you can do so safely and legally. Have cash available for when electronic payment systems fail. Over the next 90 days, build your communications plan. Write down a family rally plan, stage a battery or hand-crank radio, and designate an out-of-state family contact. Then invest in your community. Know your neighbors before you need them.

Threat Assessment

It is Highly Likely that the Iran conflict will continue to escalate in the near term, with nuclear facilities remaining active pressure points. It is Likely that the United States and Israel will take additional kinetic action against Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure before this conflict stabilizes. It is Possible that Iran attempts some form of nuclear use or threat signaling in the coming months, particularly if regime stability deteriorates further. It is Unlikely that a full strategic nuclear exchange involving major world powers occurs in the immediate term, though the probability is meaningfully higher than at any point in the past four decades.

The families most exposed are the ones with no food staged, no fuel stored, no cash on hand, and no plan for remaining at home when leaving becomes dangerous. Preparation is not a reaction to fear. It is the application of wisdom to a threat environment that is visible, documented, and moving in a clear direction.

Biblical Lens

Revelation 6:3–4 describes a rider permitted to take peace from the earth so that people would slay one another. Revelation 14:12 calls believers to endurance, keeping the commandments of God and holding their faith in Jesus regardless of what surrounds them. Habakkuk 3:17–19 goes further than either:

“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer’s; he makes me tread on my high places.”

That passage does not deny the hardship. It does not pretend the fields are full when they are empty. What it does is reorient where the believer places their weight. Preparedness without faith becomes fear. Faith without realism becomes denial. Scripture calls for both held together, which means Christians should be the clearest-eyed people in the room and the least panicked. Prepare your household, stay grounded in Scripture, and pray for this country. Pray also for the people of Iran. The Iranian church is one of the fastest-growing Christian communities in the world, living under a regime that does not represent them. They deserve our prayers.

Situation Summary

Intelligence reporting for the week of March 9–15, 2026 confirms that the Sinaloa Cartel has significantly hardened its defensive posture following the Trump administration’s designation of Mexican cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. Cartel members who previously dismissed the possibility of American military action are now taking it seriously. Sky-watching scouts called “halcones” have been deployed in the Sierra Madre mountains to monitor for U.S. aircraft. Anti-drone jamming systems costing up to $40,000 each are being purchased and positioned. Rocket-propelled grenades are being acquired. Defenses around senior leadership and fentanyl production facilities have been reinforced, and newly deployed scouts are stopping and interrogating unfamiliar vehicles — including delivery trucks — in cartel-controlled territory.

Organizations preparing for a fight they do not expect to have do not spend $40,000 per jamming unit. The cartel’s own behavior is the intelligence.

Why This Matters to Christian Families

I spent 29 years in law enforcement, including years working narcotics investigations targeting Sinaloa Cartel members in the San Francisco Bay Area. Based on those investigations and on conversations with narcotics detectives who have conducted direct interviews with cartel members, Sinaloa Cartel networks are present in all 50 states. Not all of that network is armed enforcers — it includes distributors, money movers, scouts, and logistics personnel — but the infrastructure is present and it can be activated on direction from leadership.

Cartel members have told American narcotics detectives directly that if U.S. military forces engage in Mexico, the fight will come to the United States. That is not analytical inference built from circumstantial indicators. It is sourced from cartel members themselves. Law enforcement would be the primary target. But the secondary impact on ordinary civilian life is where Christian families need to focus their attention.

The clearest model for what that looks like is October 2019 in Culiacán, when Mexican forces briefly detained Ovidio Guzmán. Within hours, the cartel deployed armed convoys, set fire to fuel stations, blocked highways across the city, and made normal civilian movement impossible. The Mexican government released Guzmán within hours to end the disruption. For the people of Culiacán, the experience was a hard lesson: the families who weathered it cleanest were the ones who did not need to go anywhere.

Threat Vectors

The direct threat to American civilians is not a cartel army moving into neighborhoods. It is the disruption that follows elevated cartel violence — law enforcement resources stretched thin responding to targeted attacks, fuel stations and supply corridors disrupted in areas of heavy cartel activity, street-level violence elevated in cities where distribution networks operate, and conditions where the calculus of leaving home changes. That is the Culiacán scenario translated to American geography. It does not require a military-scale event to produce serious disruption for families who have no supplies staged, no communications plan, and no capacity to remain at home.

Supply and Readiness Gaps

Most American families have three to five days of food on hand. That is adequate for a power outage. It is not adequate for a scenario where civil unrest makes resupply uncertain for one to three weeks. The same families typically carry no meaningful cash when electronic payment systems fail, have no fuel staged when gas stations close or run dry, and have no plan for reaching family members when cell infrastructure is degraded. These are not exotic preparedness failures — they describe the normal condition of the average American household, and they represent real vulnerability in a disruption scenario.

The other gap is community. Mexican neighborhoods that successfully managed cartel pressure did not do it as individual families. They did it as communities that knew each other, communicated, and looked out for one another. That kind of cohesion cannot be built in the middle of a crisis.

Action Steps

The preparation model here is straightforward: do not need to go out when it is dangerous to go out. That requires food, water, fuel, medication, and communications redundancy staged before the disruption begins.

This week, audit your pantry and water supply honestly and work toward a 30-day supply of shelf-stable food and at minimum two weeks of clean drinking water stored at home. Every overdose death represents a temple of the Holy Spirit reduced to a transaction.

Paul makes the positive case in 1 Corinthians 6:19–20:

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

Understanding the cartel threat through that lens changes the frame entirely. This is not just a national security problem. It is a spiritual one. The preparedness response belongs in the same frame. Proverbs 27:12 states it plainly: “The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.” Preparation is not fear — it is obedience to the wisdom God has built into the created order. There is a lot going on in the world right now, and recently something unusual caught the attention of radio monitoring groups around the world.

A shortwave transmission in Farsi was picked up internationally on 7.910 MHz. The broadcast consisted of spoken numbers repeated over the air.

If you are not familiar with shortwave intelligence communications, that might not sound like much. But to people who monitor these frequencies, it immediately raises questions.

That type of broadcast is known as a number station.

Before we jump to conclusions about what this signal might mean, it helps to understand what number stations are and why intelligence agencies have used them for decades.

I’m also going to talk about the possible explanations for this signal, including the concern many people have about sleeper cells. Then we will look at the Christian perspective on how believers should think about events like this.

The Transmission That Was Detected

Radio monitoring groups reported that the transmission was heard in Europe and other regions and repeated multiple times.

The broadcast was spoken in Farsi, the primary language of Iran.

It began with a phrase similar to:

“Attention, attention,” followed by a series of numbers.

To most listeners, those numbers are meaningless.

But for someone with the correct decryption key, they may contain a detailed message.

Now, I’m a ham radio operator. My call sign is K3PIG. “Kilo Three Pig.” I was a narcotics cop for years, so I figured it fit.

Signals like this are something radio operators and intelligence watchers pay attention to. I personally didn’t hear this particular broadcast in the Pacific Northwest, which probably means the signal was too weak to reach my area. But the reports from Europe appear credible, and the transmission has been discussed in several monitoring communities.

Right now there is no confirmed explanation for who sent the message or who it was intended for.

And that uncertainty is actually normal when it comes to number stations.

What a Number Station Is

A number station is a shortwave broadcast that transmits sequences of numbers or coded groups.

The numbers are usually spoken by a human voice or generated electronically.

To anyone without the proper key, the broadcast sounds like random numbers being read over the radio.

But the intended recipient has something called a one time pad.

A one time pad is essentially a matching code sheet that allows the numbers to be translated into words and instructions. Without that pad, the message cannot be decoded.

When used properly, one time pad encryption is considered unbreakable.

That is one reason intelligence agencies have used this system for decades.

A Method Used Throughout the Cold War

Number stations became widely known during the Cold War.

Both Western and Soviet intelligence services used them to communicate with agents operating inside foreign countries.

A couple of famous examples include:

The Lincolnshire Poacher, believed to be connected to British intelligence.

The Cuban Numbers Station, used by Cuban intelligence to communicate with agents inside the United States.

In fact, in 2001 the FBI prosecuted members of a Cuban spy ring who had been receiving instructions through a number station broadcast out of Havana.

Even today, number stations still appear from time to time across the shortwave spectrum.

To people raised in the internet era, this might seem outdated. But the method has several advantages.

Shortwave signals can travel thousands of miles, sometimes reaching multiple continents.

The receiver only needs to listen. They never transmit anything back.

That makes it extremely difficult for authorities to identify who is receiving the message.

Why This Particular Signal Is Getting Attention

There are a few reasons this broadcast caught the attention of monitoring groups.

First, the transmission was in Farsi, which suggests a connection to Iran.

Second, the broadcast was repeated multiple times, something that often happens when a message is considered important or when an agent may have missed a scheduled communication window.

Third, the signal was heard internationally, which suggests it was intended to travel long distances.

Some monitoring groups believe the signal may have originated in or near Iran, although that has not been confirmed.

Three Possible Explanations

At the moment, there are several possible explanations for this broadcast.

We simply do not know which one is correct.

Communication With Sleeper Cells

The first possibility is the one that concerns most people.

The signal could have been intended for clandestine operatives operating inside Europe or the United States.

Number stations have historically been used exactly for that purpose.

Preparation is simply being sober minded about the world we live in.

Right now I carry a full defensive setup when I am out with my family. That includes a plate carrier in my truck, rifle magazines, my pistol, and secure communications for my family.

That is not fear.

That is simply making sure that if something happens around me, I can protect my family and the people nearby.

Christians should never live in fear, but there is nothing wrong with being prepared.

When the news breaks, your first task is not action. It is control.

Confirm the information through reliable sources. Use two trusted outlets and ignore the noise. Social media will flood with rumors, recycled footage, and false reports. Do not allow your home to absorb chaos through a screen.

Gather your family immediately. Account for everyone. If someone is away from home, initiate your communication plan. Keep instructions short and clear. If your children are old enough, they should already know what to do if something major happens nationally.
