Iranian cyber actors are actively targeting the control systems that run American water treatment, fuel storage, and electrical distribution, and federal agencies assessed in early September that more attacks are being prepared as retaliation options against United States military action. Water utilities in at least twelve states were already hit in late July. Your family should be able to go two weeks without municipal water, gas station fuel, or grid power, starting now.

Highly Likely: Iranian-aligned cyber actors will conduct additional operations against United States critical infrastructure in the coming weeks.

What Happened in July
Between 26 and 27 July, more than thirty community water systems in Minnesota were hit in a coordinated attack. On 30 July the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a joint warning that cyber actors had remotely accessed water and wastewater infrastructure in at least seven states, causing a loss of monitoring and control functionality. By 4 August the number had grown to twelve states, including Michigan, Georgia, South Dakota, and New Jersey.
The worst of it was in Georgia. Clayton County Water Authority had a pump station shut down, which dropped water pressure across part of north Clayton County, raised the risk of contamination, and produced a boil water advisory for residents. Nobody got sick. But a foreign government reached into a county water system and turned off a pump, and the people affected found out about it from a notice telling them to boil their drinking water.
What the Government Is Saying Now
This is where I have to tell you something about sourcing. Intelligence bulletins on this activity have been circulating to federal, state, and local authorities and to private sector security partners, and they have not been released to the public. I have seen them. I am not going to publish restricted technical material, and there is no need to, because the assessment in those documents is backed by reporting any of you can look up yourselves.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Intelligence and Analysis assessed in early September that Iranian cyber actors are likely preparing attacks against American energy sector entities with vulnerable networks. The reason given matters more than the assessment itself. These operations give Tehran a way to hit back at the United States when it cannot reach us with its military, and the trigger named is American strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure. Four more bulletins on the same actor went out between 11 and 14 September.
On 2 September, NBC News reported that Iranian hackers had expanded beyond water into telecommunications and energy, citing four people with access to government and industry threat information. The attempts had not succeeded at that point. Two days before that report, a Telegram channel presenting itself as a voice for Iranian cyber operations announced that the United States would soon see critical events in the energy, water, and telecommunications industries, and said its earlier warnings had been ignored.
Why Iran Goes After Water and Fuel
Iran cannot fight the United States military. It can reach a water plant in a town of four thousand people. That is the entire logic, and it has been Iran’s approach since the CyberAv3ngers group defaced a water controller outside Pittsburgh in November 2023.
The equipment they are hitting is called a programmable logic controller, a small industrial computer that opens valves, runs pumps, and reads tank levels. CISA issued an advisory on 7 April naming Iranian-affiliated actors exploiting internet-exposed controllers, including Rockwell Automation and Allen-Bradley units, across water, energy, and government facilities. Think of one of these controllers as a light switch with an internet connection and no lock on the door. Nothing sophisticated is required to flip it. The country has more than 150,000 water systems, most of them run at the city or county level with no cybersecurity staff at all.
What This Looks Like at Your House
You wake up on a Tuesday and the water pressure is low. By noon your city puts out a notice to boil water before drinking it, and the notice does not say for how long. The grocery store sells out of bottled water by two in the afternoon. Your gas station has bags over three of the six pumps because the fuel management system is showing tanks it cannot verify, and the station owner will not dispense from a tank he cannot read. None of this is a collapse. It is a bad four days in one county, and it is exactly what the July attacks produced.
That is the scenario to prepare for. Not a grid-down year. A regional interruption of water, fuel, and card payment systems lasting somewhere between a day and two weeks, arriving with no warning, and ending when technicians get the controllers back under manual operation.
What to Do This Week
Store one gallon of water per person per day for fourteen days, which is fourteen gallons for one person and fifty-six for a family of four. Fill containers this week rather than buying bottled water during the event. Keep a method to treat water on hand, either a filter rated for bacteria and protozoa or unscented household bleach with the ratio written on the container.
Keep every vehicle above half a tank as a standing habit. Store fuel in approved containers up to whatever your state and local fire code allows, and rotate it with stabilizer. Keep cash in small bills, because the payment systems at the pump run on the same networks. Threat Assessment
The overall threat level for Christian Warrior Prepper readers is ORANGE (High). It is highly likely that Iranian cyber operations against American infrastructure continue, and likely that they intensify following any escalation in the military conflict. The primary concern is municipal water service, where exposure is widest and where attacks have already produced measurable service loss. The secondary concern is regional fuel availability, where manipulation of tank monitoring could cause shortages without any actual shortage of fuel.
I assess it as unlikely that any single Iranian cyber operation produces a national or multi-region outage lasting weeks. Their demonstrated capability is opportunistic exploitation of poorly secured equipment, which limits them against hardened targets and leaves them effective only where defenses are thin. That limitation is why your posture should be readiness for a short regional interruption rather than a long collapse, and why the fourteen day standard is the right measure for this threat.

The warning has been issued. Federal agencies have published it, the attackers have announced it themselves on a public channel, and twelve states have already lived through a version of it. Joseph did not store grain in Egypt because he panicked. He stored it because he had been told what was coming and he had seven years to act. You have less time than that, and the cost of acting is a few hours and the price of water containers.
